Crossing the Apls mountains with motorhome or camper van

Jessy (CA, USA):  We will go with your camper from Germany to Italy. What is the best way to cross the Alps?

Alps are highest mountains in Europe. They offer spectacular landscape and views. Crossing the alps can have different flavor depending on what you wish to enjoy.

Any hills and mountains means for the driver and his camper rather slow ride, high consumption, higher risk of accidents and also faster wear and tear of the vehicle components such as tires and much more  the brakes (discs and pads). Another aspect to look at is that keeping large camper under control as far as the speed is concerned when going downhill requires good skills on using engine brake and hydraulic pedal. If such is not followed, then major accident can happen.

Therefore you would like to enjoy Alps and have active hiking, skiing or so, then of course take a detours from the may routes and climb on the highest passes, considering all peculiarities and risk.

When, however, you only need to drive from Germany to Italy, then use the highways and tunnels – although some tunnels have a toll.
